Chapter Sixteen

Livy

The call ends, and I look at everyone in the room. I hear a noise on a phone on the center of the desk and realize there’s another call still going. I almost jump when I hear Salvatore’s voice.

“I wish I could have seen Maks’s face.”

“I appreciate the women’s offer of help if I ever need it. Maybe they insisted upon talking to me, but how would they know I exist if not for their husbands? I don’t appreciate being manipulated, and that’s what Maks and his family did. They used me to get to your family. Apparently, I can be grateful and unreasonably pissed at the same time.”

Salvatore’s voice comes through the speaker again.

“Sylvia had a sister who was attacked, assaulted, and killed because of the family she was from and the one she married into. She was pregnant. She got separated from her guards, and she ran. She passed families where she could have begged for help, but she knew they wouldn’t open their doors to her. She and her baby died because of that. It’s Sylvia’s rule that all women and children have shelter in our home. I agree with her, though she’d do it even if I didn’t. She explained that to Heather, Aleks’s wife, a few months ago. It seems the Kutsenko women are of the same mind. You can trust them, Olivia. They’re the only ones you can trust.”

I’m watching Luca as Salvatore speaks. I feel the sadness in the room as much as I hear it in Salvatore’s voice. Luca’s nodding as his uncle speaks. Part of me wants to know the full story of what happened to Sylvia’s sister, but I would never ask, and I know it’s probably better not to hear it. Then again, maybe I need to understand the full extent of the danger I’m facing. I don’t know.

Luca’s observing me just as intently as I am him. I can tell the longer I say nothing and don’t move, the more apprehensive he’s becoming. It makes me really stop and think about how this must be for him. I’ve had boyfriends since college, but he has dated no one in years. He’s let no one into his life like he has with me. He has a damn good reason not to. He’s out of his depths on how to be a regular boyfriend, and then he’s trying to navigate bringing a woman into the Mafia. Stressful doesn’t even touch how this must be for him. The situation has mired me in my own fears and doubts. I haven’t considered his position nearly enough.

I open my arms to him. I offer the comfort this time. He steps forward, and I pull him close. I make sure my body is entirely relaxed against his, but I hug him tightly. I feel the tension ease from him as I run my hand up and down his back. I lean away so I can see his face. I don’t make a sound as I mouth the one word that finally washes the fear from his eyes.
